This week’s crucial social media news round-up:
1. Facebook ads much more targeted. Next month Facebook is going to start testing a new system for its ads, which will allow marketers to target people by workplace, education, job titles, a recent life event and past purchasing behaviour. It will be tested in the US and will be released more widely towards the end of Q1.
Why this matters to you: If you are trying to promote your business on Facebook, this allows you to reach the right people much more easily, making Facebook a far more effective marketing tool.
Why this matters to Facebook: It’s another step in its strategy of convincing people to pay for advertising. Will allow it to compete better with LinkedIn.

2. LinkedIn to tell you how people know their connections. As of this week, LinkedIn will not just tell you *who* a particular person is connected to, but also how they know them. For example, perhaps they were in university together, or maybe they worked at the same firm last year.
Why this matters to you: If you want someone to meet a prospect you’ve seen on LinkedIn, you need to find the person who knows them best to make that introduction. Now, if you have several connections in common with that prospect, you will be able to choose whether to approach John who knew him 18 years ago – or Sam who worked with him more recently.

3. New domain names for sale. Remember the good old days when most web addresses ended in .com or .org? This week, seven new domain names are going to be released – .bike, .clothing, .guru, .holdings, .plumbing, .singles and .ventures. Almost 1,000 more are to follow this year.
Why this matters to you: If you are marketing your business online, you might be able to find a much more specific domain name to reflect your niche. On the other hand, if you want to defend your brand, it will no longer be enough to buy yourbusiness.com and yourbusiness.co.uk. You might have to purchase many more domains, which will cost ££.
